Lake Macquarie cricket fans are set to be bowled over this week when the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Regional Roadshow rolls into town.

Local sports lovers will get the chance to experience the buzz and excitement of the event at John Street Field, Warners Bay, on Thursday 6 October from 1pm until 5pm.

The roadshow is scheduled to tour 11 regional locations over the next month in the lead-up to the opening Super 12 showdown between Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday 22 October.

Sixteen teams will contest 45 matches, at seven venues, during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin admitted it was a great opportunity for residents to soak up the tournament’s atmosphere.

“The Regional Roadshow will bring the exhilaration of the biggest global sporting event in Australasia to Newcastle,” he said.

“Featuring a range of interactive activities and displays, including a virtual reality experience of hitting a six at the SCG, attendees can win a number of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup prizes.

“So, get along on Thursday and feel the buzz of the tournament first-hand.”

Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the Regional Roadshow was an example of the benefits of the NSW Government’s 10 World Cups in 10 Years initiative.

“Regional NSW is the heartland of cricket in our state,” he explained.

“And, the roadshow has hit the sweet spot by providing entertainment and inspiration for bush cricket fans across NSW ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

“Despite having a smaller population than Sydney, regional NSW accounts for about half of the state’s registered players, more than 250 adolescent cricketers in the Cricket NSW pathway system and produces over 50% of NSW’s contracted professional cricketers.”
