Police investigate ‘suspicious’ fire at vacant Kurri Kurri building

SHARE

Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a building in Kurri Kurri overnight.

About 8.15pm on Wednesday 3 March, emergency services were called to an abandoned premises on Lang Street, the site of the derelict Kurri Kurri Workers Club, following reports the structure was well alight.

Crews from Fire and Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW) attended and extinguished the blaze about two hours later.

“Unfortunately, this building has been in the sights of FRNSW for a while as a high risk, and the probability of vandals and squatters setting it alight was a real concern,” a FRNSW spokesperson said.

“Last night smoke and flames were reported and multiple units from our area and Newcastle were on deck.

“Although it looked like it was going to be a total loss, crews managed to gain the upper hand pretty quickly due to pre-incident planning in 2020.

“Everyone did a great job.”

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District also attended and established a crime scene.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information or who may have seen or heard anything in the near vicinity between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on 3 March is urged to come forward.
