More than 97 per cent of community members surveyed believe an upgrade of the Newcastle Link Road and Minmi Road intersection is important, according to a newly released consultation report.
The NSW Government has committed $5.8 million to planning the Cameron Park upgrade, which aims to improve safety, ease congestion and support future growth along the busy corridor.
Community consultation on the preferred design was held between September and October 2025, attracting more than 530 submissions, including 502 completed online surveys.
Almost 89 per cent of respondents supported the preferred design.
Feedback also included calls for construction to begin as soon as possible, as well as questions about the proposed traffic lights, lane configuration, traffic noise and potential construction impacts.
The project will now move into the concept design and environmental assessment stage, with WSP Australia appointed to carry out the work.
Transport for NSW will undertake further investigations over the coming months and continue consulting with residents and key stakeholders as planning progresses.
However, a construction timeframe has not yet been confirmed and will depend on future funding and planning approvals.
State Member for Cessnock Clayton Barr said the upgrade would help address a known bottleneck used by thousands of motorists each day.
“This is an important project for our growing communities,” he said.
“Upgrading this intersection will improve safety, ease congestion and help local families spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home.”
Mr Barr said continued residential and commercial growth made investment in local road infrastructure increasingly important.
