Stay in touch at Wallsend this spring

SHARE

Dust off your sneakers, grab a friend and register your team now for the Wallsend Touch Association’s Spring Senior competition.

All the action kicks off in the men’s, women’s and mixed divisions from Monday 9 August – and continues on Wednesdays as well until the end of the season.

Or, if family mixed is more to your liking, those matches take place each Wednesday.

“Everyone’s looking forward to the start of it next month,” publicity officer Kellie Johnston said.

“On Mondays, we’re fielding between 50 and 60 sides, with 30 to 40 on a Wednesday evening.

“It’s a terrific night, especially in spring.

“Family mixed is a great little comp.

“It’s a mixture of young kids, from the age of six, playing touch with their mums and dads.

“Our clubhouse is readily available, too.

“Players can hang around, have a drink if they’d like afterwards following seniors’ games.”

Johnston said touch was as popular as ever at the Wolves’ headquarters in 2021.

“We’re finding, especially with COVID-19 and because we’re an outdoor sport, our numbers have remained strong,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.

“In fact, a lot of people have returned to it.

“They can interact with their mates on the field and de-stress, particularly after the past 12 months we’ve had and financial concerns.

“Touch is very affordable compared to other sports.

“So, I think, the whole social interaction, the monetary aspect, the outdoor nature of it and being with family and friends is a drawcard.

“Plus, there’s no age limit.

“You can play mixed, you can play with your young kids.

“It’s really good for morale in the family and the chance to spend some time together, in a healthy setting.”
