When it comes to impressive sporting achievements, Maitland is clearly punching above its weight.
That was clearly evident on Friday 28 November, when three local figures were inducted into the Maitland City Hall of Fame.
The ceremony, which took place at the Maitland Park Rotunda and presented by mayor Phillip Penfold, honoured Matt Lantry (rugby league), Lindsay Guy (martial arts) and Tom Danilidis (basketball) for their outstanding contributions to sport and the community.
For Mr Lantry, the accolade held special meaning.
A Maitland native, who grew up playing rugby league and now coaches the Pickers in NEWRL as well as the Newcastle Knights SG Ball Cup side, he described the induction as a “deeply humbling experience”.
“Being placed in the Hall of Fame for your local community is something I value significantly,” he said.
“It’s a really special moment.
“It has given me the opportunity to sit back and reflect and look at what has been achieved.
“While I receive the plaudits, it’s really the result of a wonderful group of committee members, coaching staff and players who share the same vision.”
Under Mr Lantry’s leadership, the Pickers have claimed six titles in as many years, guided by a culture of humility, respect, discipline and teamwork.
“Our main priority was making sure that we had good people in our football club who knew how to work hard,” he explained.
“We have continued to evolve that culture over the past six years… and it’s been a consistent factor in our success.”
As someone who grew up playing rugby league in Maitland and went on to the NRL, Mr Lantry said it was fantastic to be able to influence and inspire the next generation of local players coming through.
“From the Pickers Academy to coaching the Knights’ SG Ball side, it’s refreshing to work with youngsters with a thirst to improve,” he added.
“Hopefully, it can help shape their careers as well.”
Looking ahead, Mr Lantry aims for a fifth consecutive Newcastle Rugby League title with the Pickers.
“It’s about continually challenging ourselves to improve week in, week out,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.
“If we do that, and stay healthy, I don’t doubt that we will see a fifth premiership.
“Success comes from working hard and today’s recognition is evidence of that.”

The celebrations then turned to martial arts, as Mr Guy was recognised for more than 40 years of dedication.
Guys Karate has produced countless black belts while providing a disciplined, inspiring environment for young athletes and families.
Born and raised in Maitland, too, he’s represented Australia at national and international competitions.
His achievements include induction into the International Sport Karate Association Hall of Fame, the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the World Karate Hall of Fame.
Beyond martial arts, Mr Guy has contributed to the broader community through mentoring programs, life membership at Newcastle Surf Life Saving, and leadership roles such as chairing the Maitland Saints AFL Club.
His efforts have helped build confidence, resilience and discipline across generations, strengthening Maitland’s sporting and community identity.
Finishing strong, Mr Danilidis was honoured as a true captain of Maitland basketball, leaving a legacy that spans six decades.
Starting as a player at the local PCYC, he went on to coach, mentor and lead the Mustangs, helping establish the club as a respected force regionally and nationally.
Known as the father of Maitland basketball, he played a pivotal role in developing women’s programs, creating pathways for athletes at all levels, and nurturing others who have progressed to leadership positions across Australia.
The induction highlights a lifetime spent building the game and leaving a lasting vestige in the community.
As a permanent reminder of all the inductees and their long-lasting impacts on the Maitland community, paver nameplates located in the Maitland Park Rotunda now commemorate each of them, ensuring their legacies will inspire future generations of local athletes.
