Sponsorship keeps Waratahs’ juniors on the ball

The Waratahs Junior Rugby Union Club (WJRUC) has been bolstered by a new sponsor as it kicks off the second half of the 2021 season.

And, in a shot in the arm for the organisation, the partnership will provide a windfall in 2022, too.

WJRUC president Chris Grieve was delighted to reveal Churchill’s Carpet Court Flooring Centre had just signed on as a major financial benefactor for the next 18 months.

“It’s terrific news for the club and for the young teams that are playing for The Waratahs,” he said.

“Paul Murphy OAM, who is managing director of Churchill’s, has had a long association with The Waratahs as a player, administrator and supporter.

“His assistance for the junior section of the organisation is very much appreciated.

“The sponsorship will allow the club to continue with confidence for the remainder of 2021.

“But, it also lets us plan for the long term as the 2022 comp follows shortly after the current season with pre-season training and early trial games.”

In another boost for The Waratahs, newly-appointed Hunter Wildfires Brand Ambassador and former Australian Test star David Campese will visit the youngsters at Waratah Oval on Tuesday 6 July.

“It’s a big thing for the club,” Grieve told the Newcastle Weekly.

“To have a legend of the game come to Newcastle and support junior rugby is great for local sport.

“Ironically, he did a 30-second ad to promote The Waratahs in 1997; I’ve still got a copy of it.

“So, it’s nice to see him returning to the region, albeit a few years later.”

Murphy was chuffed about the arrangement, too.

He said The Waratahs and Churchill’s, based in Tudor Street, Hamilton, both had a long involvement with the local community and it was a fitting combination as sport played such a significant role in Newcastle.

“The Waratahs just celebrated their 80th anniversary while Churchill’s has been in Newcastle for 67 years,” he stated.

“We’ve had a close association before and the new sponsorship will allow the junior club to attract more boys and girls to the code.

“Rugby union is a great family sport that builds confidence, sporting ability and teamwork in young people and generates life-long friendships.

“It’s something that both The Waratahs and Churchill’s know is an important element in sustaining sporting clubs and business relations.”

The WJRUC boasts teams that range from Tiny Tahs (Kindergarten to K2) through the early years to a girl’s under-13 side, which formed this year.

The club has produced 10 Australian and 15 NSW junior representatives since it was established in 1940 and plays in the Hunter Junior Rugby competition.
