Speed cameras have been reinstated at Sandgate following the completion of the Hexham Straight upgrade.
The two fixed cameras on the Pacific Highway are now operational, after being removed about three years ago during construction works between the Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Hexham Bridge.
Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp confirmed the cameras were back in operation on Tuesday, 11 August.
The northbound camera has been reinstated at its previous location, while the southbound camera has been moved about 70 metres north of its former position to align with the completed road upgrade.
The cameras have monitored the stretch of road since installed in 2003, with Transport for NSW data showing a reduction in serious crashes in the area since their installation.
In the five years before the cameras were introduced, there were 23 casualty crashes on the Pacific Highway at Sandgate, within 500 metres of either side of the camera locations.
Those crashes resulted in one death and 24 injuries.
Since the cameras were installed, there have been no fatalities in the vicinity and a significant reduction in injuries.
Transport for NSW Road Safety Regulation executive director Duncan Lucas said the cameras would reinforce the importance of motorists driving to the conditions.
“Speeding remains the leading factor involved in death and injuries on our roads, contributing to about 40 per cent of road fatalities,” Mr Lucas said.
“When the unexpected happens on the road – the speed that you’re travelling at matters.
“’Just a bit over’ can be the difference between stopping safely and being involved in a crash.”
The cameras will initially operate in warning mode for at least one month following their reinstatement.
Motorists caught speeding during this period will receive a warning letter rather than a fine, with fines and demerit points to apply once the warning period ends.
