The first sod has been turned for Catherine McAuley Primary School in Medowie, marking a milestone for the Port Stephens community and the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
The new learning institute is set to open in 2027.
And, it’ll join the Medowie Catholic education precinct alongside Catherine McAuley College and St Nicholas Early Education Centre.
Once complete, the school will feature purpose-built, flexible learning spaces, landscaped outdoor areas, and modern facilities designed to nurture students’ creativity and wellbeing.

Director of Catholic Schools Jacqueline Wilkinson said the official sod turning ceremony celebrated the Diocese’s commitment to supporting the region’s growing population with more Catholic education options.
“Catherine McAuley Primary School Medowie will provide pupils with a purpose-built, faith-filled learning environment where they can thrive academically, socially and spiritually,” she explained.
“This project reflects our dedication to offering families access to high-quality Catholic education, supported by strong values and a deep sense of community.”
Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, Michael Kennedy, highlighted the legacy of the school’s namesake, Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy.
“Catherine McAuley was a woman of faith and compassion whose service to those in need has left an enduring legacy,” he said.
“Her values will guide the mission of this new school and inspire generations of students to learn and grow while making a positive difference.”
