Sleapy’s Day 2026 has cemented its place as one of the Hunter’s most powerful community events, raising an impressive $300,784 for local families in need.

Despite wet weather for the second-year running, the rain did not dampen spirits at Townson Oval, with crowds turning out in force to support the annual charity day.

Now in its 16th year, the event brought together rugby league, fundraising and community connection, with all proceeds staying in the Hunter and New England to provide practical and immediate support to those doing it tough.

Founder Peter Sleap, the man known as “Sleapy,” said the growth of the event had been remarkable.

“It’s been amazing, absolutely amazing,” Sleapy said.

“To raise over $300,000… it’s pretty special.

“That’s people digging deep to help others, and you don’t take that for granted.

“We’ve had an incredible run with it, and every year the community just gets behind it more and more.

“When we first started, it was just about giving something back after my diagnosis… now it’s grown into something the whole community is proud of.”

On the field, the top-of-the-table clash between Maitland Pickers and Souths delivered a high-quality contest, while off the field, the focus remained firmly on the families and individuals.

The event once again honoured the “Angels” whose stories continue to inspire the community to rally together.

Mr Sleap said the purpose of the day has never changed.

“At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about – the community coming together and doing good for people who need it,” he said.

“And that’s something this community has always done well.”

Funds raised from the event will remain in the local community, going directly towards supporting families when they need it most.

Sleapy’s Day has grown significantly since its early beginnings, evolving into a major event on the Hunter calendar while maintaining its grassroots spirit.

With another successful year complete, organisers are already looking ahead, with the event continuing to make a lasting impact across the region.
