Police are investigating the circumstances of a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a man at Mayfield on Tuesday afternoon.

About 4.30pm on 6 August, emergency services were called to a petrol station on Maitland Road.

It followed reports the driver of a Toyota Camry had crashed into a fuel bowser after attempting to drive from the premises.

The man, believed to be aged in his 80s, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

He was then conveyed to Calvary Mater Hospital where he later died.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District are now looking into the cause of the incident.

While the man is yet to be formally identified, a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
