Silly Socks Day to remember slain paramedic Steven Tougher

Sunday 14 April marks the first anniversary of the tragic death of NSW Ambulance paramedic Steven Tougher.

To celebrate his life, all NSW Ambulance employees will be donning silly socks for the day in his honour.

Steven’s family want him to be remembered as a remarkable paramedic, husband, father, son and brother.

Silly Socks Day will be held 14 April to remember NSW paramedic Steven Tougher, killed in the line of duty

By wearing unmatched, bright, striped, crazy patterns they hope his cheeky character will be celebrated.

NSW Ambulance chief executive Dr Dominic Morgan said a year on from Steven’s death, it was important to remember the man he was.

“Steven was an inspiring, happy man and Silly Socks Day is about bringing people together to celebrate Steven and the joy he brought to many,” Dr Morgan said.

“Every other day of the year our uniformed staff have to wear black or navy socks, so I hope our frontline teams get a kick out of seeing some colour and pattern above their boots on Sunday.”

Everyone is welcome to get involved, with NSW Ambulance family and friends also set to wear their silly socks on the day.

“Wear them at home or out and about.”

The organisation is also asking participants to share their photos by tagging  @NSWAmbulance #sillysocks4steve

Twenty-nine-year-old Steven was allegedly stabbed to death in the back of an ambulance parked outside a Sydney McDonald’s while taking a food break with his colleague at the end of his nightshift.

The man accused of his stabbing, then aged 21, has been charged with murder while also facing charges for three other unrelated offences.

Since his death, Steven’s father Jeff Tougher has started a petition to have harsher penalties introduced for those that harm workers in their line of duty.

He hopes to gain 150,000 signatures.

To date the petition has been signed 93,000 times.

It’s 3am and your newborn is coughing and turning blue…who you gonna call?
Your elderly mum is lying in a crumpled heap after slipping in the shower…who you gonna call?
You feel a biting pain in your chest…who you gonna call?
Well as of 14/4/23 there’s one less angel of mercy to answer your call. Snatched away from the life he loved.
People ask me if there’s anything I need. Well there is.
I need your support.
I need your voice.
I need you to back me in a bid to advocate for Stronger laws to protect these people who serve the community with such passion and dedication. Laws like mandatory life sentences for killing anyone in the line of duty.
A mandatory prison term for assaulting these people.
Regardless of circumstance or state of mind.
