SHARE

Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) has experienced a spike in new locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, with a further seven infections recorded.

The region registered three on Saturday – with two in the Maitland LGA and one in the Newcastle LGA.

But, a further seven overnight, and an increase in exposure venues, is cause for some alarm for local medical experts.

One person in the Hunter is in intensive care.

Of the new cases, two are from the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Maitland LGAs, with one from the Cessnock LGA.

Four are linked to a known cluster and investigations for the remaining three are ongoing.

Six people were infectious in the community.

Following an extensive investigation and repeated testing, a Kurri Kurri case previously reported
has now been excluded.

Unfortunately, the latest figures as of 8pm on 28 August, brings the total to 179 in the HNELHD since 5 August.

Overall, NSW amassed 1,218 new cases of COVID-19.

Three infections were acquired overseas in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, and eight previously reported cases have been excluded following further investigation.

Sadly, NSW Health has been notified of the deaths of six people who had COVID-19.

A man in his 80s from south-west Sydney died at Nepean Hospital, after acquiring his infection there earlier this month.

His is the fifth death linked to an outbreak at the hospital.

A man in his 80s from Sydney’s inner west died at Concord Hospital.

He acquired his infection at the Wyoming Aged Care facility, and is the fifth death linked to this outbreak.

Two men in their 70s from south-west Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital.

A man in his 70s and a woman in her 80s from western Sydney died at Westmead Hospital.

It remains vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is a close or casual contact, isolates and is tested immediately.

There are more than 410 testing clinics open across NSW.
