Seven Hunter schools join COVID-19 closure list

SHARE

In a worrying sign for parents, another seven Hunter schools have joined an extensive list of those to be closed by COVID-19.

Overnight, the NSW Department of Education announced Hillsborough Public, Anna Bay Public, Shortland Public, Stanford Merthyr Infants, Tea Gardens Public, Windale Public and Hunter Sports High would be shut on Tuesday 4 November.

Werrington Public, Cumberland High, Condell Park High and Briar Road Public were also forced to take similar action throughout the state.

Despite all precautions being taken, it’s concerning the number of facilities in the region – including Newcastle Junior, Eleebana Public, Jewells Public, Soldiers Point Public, Maitland Grossman High, Thornton Public, Irrawang Public, Mayfield West Public, Weston Public, Mayfield East Public, Carrington Public, Maitland East Public and Francis Greenway High School, Woodberry – which have been impacted, too, in the past week.

“Hillsborough Public, Anna Bay Public, Shortland Public, Stanford Merthyr Infants, Tea Gardens Public, Windale Public and Hunter Sports High will be closed effective immediately after a school community member/s tested positive for COVID-19,” an NSW Education spokesperson said.

“Most are normally only closed for 24 hours to allow contact tracing and cleaning.

“All staff and students have been asked to self-isolate and follow the NSW Health advice and protocols.

“NSW Health has requested anyone who has been unwell or if you develop any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting or extreme tiredness to be tested at one of the COVID-19 testing clinics.

Meanwhile, it’s better news for Newcastle Junior, Jewells Public, Maitland Grossman High and Soldiers Point Public.

“Each school has been thoroughly cleaned and will reopen on Tuesday 2 November,” the spokesperson said.

“Along with Tamworth South Public, Moama Public, Lapstone Public, James Cook Boys High, Cabramatta West Public, Manning Gardens Public, Cowra Public, Henry Kendall High, Strathfield South High, Chertsey Public, Hampden Park Public and Russell Vale Public, it’s business as usual.”

Further information on COVID-19 is available on the NSW Government website.
