Heavy rainfall across Newcastle and surrounding regions have triggered flash flooding, road closures and emergency rescues.
But, there could be further woes over the coming days, too.
It’s understood the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) received more than 600 calls for assistance related to the severe weather at the weekend, primarily on Sunday 27 April.
In the Hunter, some areas recorded up to 130mm of rain, overwhelming drains and creeks.
Roads across the region were also heavily flooded by Sunday afternoon, including major routes through Gateshead, South Cardiff and Floraville.
About 3.30pm, police and SES crews converged on Oakdale Road in Gateshead.
Two people were rescued from a vehicle after reportedly attempting to drive through floodwaters.
Thankfully, emergency responders safely retrieved both occupants without injury.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) cautioned “localised river level rises and flash flooding were likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall”.
Low-lying areas near Winding Creek in South Cardiff were among the hardest hit.
It prompted the NSW SES to issue a warning advising residents to stay informed and prepare for possible catchment rises.
They were also directed to prepare evacuation plans, consider impacts to travel and avoid all floodwater.
Flood concerns extended to Floraville, too, where rapid water accumulation threatened streets near the Floraville Road Detention Basin.
Homes around Floraville Street, Margaret Street, Bell Street and Maxwell Avenue were specifically identified.
Authorities are continuing to monitor conditions with further rain expected throughout the week.
