Selfless volunteers thanked

SHARE

Our selfless community-minded helpers shared a snag or two, while telling a yarn or three, at a special Volunteer Day Thank You BBQ at Hamilton on Friday.

With the Newcastle Men’s Shed cooking up a storm in Beaumont Street, unpaid workers from a number of organisations, including St Vincent de Paul and Samaritans, popped in for a bite to eat, a cupcake, a coffee and, of course, a catch-up.

From Monday 17 to Sunday 23 May, National Volunteer Week celebrated the significant contribution of Australia’s almost six million volunteers.

Each year, these people dedicate more than 600 million hours to assist others.

Never has this been more evident than recently where Australia has dealt with drought, devastating bushfires, floods and then a global pandemic.

Amid COVID-19, while many of us stayed home, volunteers continued to deliver essential services, organise food packages and offer care, comfort and more to support the well-being of local residents.

And, last week’s function at the Newcastle Men’s Shed was a small way to express everyone’s gratitude for their whole-hearted efforts.

“Hamilton has many dedicated volunteers from all walks of life and backgrounds,” Hamilton Business Association Inc treasurer and active member Evan Reid said.

“It’s what makes Hamilton so unique and so diverse.

“Our charities and our volunteers support so many people.

“We just wanted to thank them on a personal level.

“And, what better way than over a tasty snag and a good chat.

“It was another great activation from Hamilton BIA.”
