‘Seaing is Believing’ with the MV Steve Irwin

SHARE

Locals and visitors alike are in for a real treat this month with the opportunity to experience the MV Steve Irwin in an exciting event series.

Now a retired hero of the Sea Shepherd fleet, the infamous and colourful vessel is docked in Carrington while it looks for a new home, possibly in Newcastle.

Seaing is Believing, located on Newcastle Harbour, will take place from Friday until Sunday, for five weeks, between 30 September and 30 October.

And, thanks to the support of City of Newcastle and Out of the Square, people can board the MV Steve Irwin for an immersive encounter, including a ship tour where guests will see campaign posters from past Sea Shepherd missions, learning about its important plight for ocean conservation.

Moving through the vessel, they will also visit the helicopter hangar, crew cabins, engine room and onto the bridge.

To top it off, evening excursions will include a world first, too.

Melbourne-based and now resident artist aboard “The Steve” Victor Dreams Holder has created an absorbing light show project within the ship.

For the night tours, projections on the vessel’s main deck will feature a huge screen above, depicting Sea Shepherd’s efforts, ocean conservation and sea life.

The entire 1.5-hour experience is curated by Kerrie Goodall, the ship’s custodian.

She bought the vessel in 2019 to save it from being sold for scrap in Hong Kong.

“I’d love people to join us to learn more about The Steve’s contribution to ocean conservation and the overwhelming support of locals has made this a reality,” the MV Steve Irwin custodian said.

“There are so many genuinely caring residents in this town who are passionate about where they live, the environment, and how they contribute to the city.”

The MV Steve Irwin was given historic vessel status by the Australian Maritime Museum in early 2020, which is why Novocastrians may have noticed an unfamiliar sight in the harbour over the past few months.

Adult tickets for Seaing is Believing start at $25 per person.
