Screaming Jets founder leads well-wishes for Newcastle musician Greg Bryce after sickening attack

The Screaming Jets founder Grant Walmsley has led the messages of support for a local musician who was stabbed outside a gig in Newcastle at the weekend.

Sixty-nine-year-old Greg Bryce suffered horrific stab wounds to his chest and back after being assaulted by a man, 53, near the entrance of Club Merewether, formerly Merewether Bowling Club, about 7.40pm on Sunday 22 March.

He’s currently in a serious but stable condition at John Hunter Hospital.

His assailant, believed to be the ex-partner of Mr Bryce’s girlfriend, was charged with attempted murder (DV) and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic) on Monday 23 March.

“Hi everyone, [I] just want you all to know that our brother Greg Bryce is doing ok,” Mr Walmsley posted on social media.

“He is under great care and being looked after by the hospital team and family.

“He’s in a good state… and knows and feels everyone’s well-wishes and love.

“Right now, he needs quiet and space to heal.

“I know there is so much love for Greg, so keep it flowing and know that he is doing ok. Much love, GW.”

Mr Bryce’s musical career began in the rock industry as a guitarist with Newcastle outfit DV8.

The band filled huge auditoriums during the 80s with its hard-hitting original songs penned by the singer-songwriter.

They recorded many charting albums and singles during this time.

Mr Bryce’s songs also feature on The Screaming Jets’ first two platinum selling albums as well as the offering, Hits and Pieces, and Do Ya.

Since the mid-90s, returning from two-and-a-half years studying and teaching yoga in India, he focused most of his energy on acoustic music.

He also spent 13 years as a member of Jigzag (1997-2009), the highly-regarded folk/roots trio who has played main stages at major festivals throughout Australia such as Woodford and Port Fairy and also overseas in Canada, UK, Denmark and Finland.

The band won The Best Live Act Award at the National Folk/Roots Awards in Canberra 2006, which was voted for by peers, audiences and festival programmers throughout Australia.

Jigzag secured the Best Band honours at the Golden Fiddle Awards at the Tamworth Festival in 2009, too.

Many of Mr Bryce’s songs feature on their albums.

These days, he performs mostly solo shows with occasional band appearances.

The talented muso was next due to take to the stage with Georgia Hazzard at Club Charlestown on 27 March.
