A Lake Macquarie retiree has accidentally gifted herself a $10,000 winning Instant Scratch-Its top prize, initially destined for a friend’s Christmas card.

The $1 ticket was purchased at Edgeworth Newsagency in Main Road.

Sharing her joy with an official from The Lott today, the surprised woman explained how the win came to be.

“I bought a whole lot of Instant Scratch-Its tickets to put in Christmas cards for my family and friends,” the Edgeworth resident said.

“I wrote up all the Christmas cards and I had one ticket left, so I thought I may as well keep it for myself.

“When I scratched it and saw $10,000, I was dumbfounded.

“I was so excited.

“I couldn’t believe it; I just sat there completely stunned.

“I could have easily put that ticket in someone’s Christmas card.

“But, I felt as though it was really meant to be for me.

“It was unbelievable.

“Honestly, I still haven’t gotten over it.”

When asked how she planned to enjoy her instant windfall, the retiree said she’d be relishing every moment of her prize.

“I’m going to go on a holiday to South Australia,” she declared.

“It’ll be amazing.

“I’m also going to give some to my granddaughter; she will really appreciate it.”

Edgeworth Newsagency owners Jo and Kaite Atkinson said they were ecstatic for their regular and loyal customer.

“We are so happy for her,” they added.

“When we scanned the winning ticket, we pretty much had to pick her up off the floor.

“This is the second year in a row that we’ve sold a top prize-winning Christmas scratchie off one of our Christmas trees.

“We hope the wins continue for our customers in 2021.”
