School holidays mini fest to draw out inner illustrator

Maitland is expected to become home to some of the region’s best future children’s books thanks to a school holidays event this weekend.

Read, Grow, Inspire: Book Week Mini fest will welcome an impressive line-up of illustrators to Maitland Library for a free creative workshop on Saturday 15 July.

The three-hour mini festival will include internationally-recognised illustrator Dub Leffler, Lynn Jenkins, Nicky Bolton and Jenny Goodman.

Children and their families will be invited to attend interactive sessions, art workshops, and activities designed to inspire a love for books and storytelling.

Maitland Libraries coordinator community participation Carol Edmonds says the event is about providing “a unique and enriching opportunity for children to engage with the world of literature, enhance their artistic abilities, and immerse themselves in the joy of storytelling”.

Dub Leffler will be headlining Maitland’s newest book week mini fest.

Headlining the event is Dub Leffler, one of Australia’s most sought-after illustrators of children’s literature.

A Bigambul, Mandandanji man from southwest Queensland, he’s taught and workshopped illustration in Australia, Scotland, Indonesia and the United States.

He has collaborated with Sally Morgan, Coral Vass and Banksy in recent years.

Dub’s award-winning bestseller picture book Once There Was A Boy (2011) received international recognition, was acquired by the Library of Congress and was featured several times at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

He has created 25 books to date.
