Santas to pound the pavement

Santa suits are not approved gear for most runners.

But hundreds of people will don red and white costumes and pound the pavement next month to kick-start a special time of year for families.

The annual Variety Santa Fun Run is set to start and finish at Newcastle’s The Station on Sunday 8 December, with markets to include food, drinks, and Christmas-related items for sale.

It will serve as a major fundraiser for Variety – the Children’s Charity.

The charity supports kids and families who are facing many challenges through sickness, disadvantage or living with special needs. Their work allows kids to gain mobility, to get out and about in the community, to communicate, achieve independence, and increase their self-esteem.

Variety’s Head of Regional Development NSW & ACT, Jason Bourke, says organisers hope it will be the biggest event yet.

“We’re certainly hoping for more than 1,000 participants this year,” he says.

“With the start and finish at The Station, we think it’s going to add a fair bit of excitement and a lot more interest once people finish the run.

“It’s just a really important event at a special time of the year.

“Obviously, Christmas is all about children and, being a children’s charity, we think that this is a great event to remind the community of our presence here in the Hunter and the work that we do to support kids living with disadvantage or disability.”

Participants can either run or walk from The Station, off Scott Street, Watt Street or Wharf Road, before following paths along the harbour foreshore, past Nobbys Beach, onto Newcastle Beach, and returning on the same route.

There are 2.5, five, and 10-kilometre options.

The event is being presented by the Newcastle Family and Sports Podiatry.
