Newcastle shoppers can now receive Amazon orders within hours, with the online retail giant expanding its Prime Free Same-Day Delivery service.
The rollout covers Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens and Cessnock, allowing eligible Prime members to order from more than one million products.
Orders can be placed by 11am for delivery before 10pm the same day on orders over $49.
Amazon has also launched Harris Farm Markets on its platform for eligible Newcastle customers.
This gives shoppers access to same-day and next-day delivery of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and other groceries from the Cooks Hill store.
Amazon spokesperson Duncan Fredericks said Newcastle was selected because it has become one of the company’s fastest-growing regions in Australia.
“We’re seeing more and more people really embracing Amazon because they can get so many different products, and things like fast and free delivery are super important for them,” Fredericks told Newcastle Weekly.
“We expect a lot of customers will be super happy with this and will be making the most of that fast and free delivery.”
The expansion forms part of Amazon’s broader investment in Australia.
The company is investing more than $1.6 billion in its logistics network between 2024 and 2027, creating about 4,500 jobs nationally.
Fredericks said the rollout would also create additional opportunities for Amazon Flex drivers.
He said Harris Farm Markets was chosen as Amazon’s grocery partner because of its strong reputation for Australian produce and its ability to provide fast deliveries directly from its Newcastle store.
Wallsend-based business Javson Sports Australia, which sells boxing and martial arts equipment through Amazon, says the faster delivery service will benefit both businesses and customers.
Director Kasm Sheikh said Amazon’s fulfilment network had helped the business reach customers across Australia while reducing delivery times and shipping costs.
“A lot of times we get inquiries asking if we can deliver in one day or the same day because people have a match the next day or their equipment is broken,” he said.
“I think it’s a very good opportunity for us and the customers.”
Mr Sheikh encouraged other Newcastle businesses to consider selling through Amazon, describing it as a cost-effective way to reach more customers while improving service.
