Rugby legend John Eales to headline Waratahs anniversary luncheon

The legendary John Eales AM will help honour six outstanding sides from The Waratahs Rugby Union Club at a special Anniversary Reunion this month.

The former Wallabies captain, and World Cup-winning skipper, has accepted an invitation to be the guest speaker at the function, at the Hamilton North Bowling Club, on Thursday 11 August.

The Waratahs Old Boys’ Association is commemorating the 70th anniversary of first grade securing the 1952 premiership.

It’s also been five decades since the club won the senior title and President’s Cup in 1972, while the “seconds” reached the grand final of the same year.

The event will praise the achievements of the 1992 third grade and 2002 reserve grade teams, too.

“The Tahs host a sports’ luncheon every year,” Old Boys’ Association president Paul Paisley said.

“We recognised that a number of our sides were celebrating an anniversary in 2022 – the 70th of first grade winning the 1952 premiership; the 50th of first grade and President’s Cup winning the 1972 premierships, while reserve grade contested the 1972 grand final; the 30th of third grade winning the 1992 premiership; and the 20th of reserve grade playing in the 2002 grand final.

“So far, we’ve been lucky to contact most of the players from the teams, except the 1952 squad.

“They’ve sadly passed away but the club wanted to acknowledge their contribution to the 82-year history of The Waratahs Rugby Union Club.”

Paisley’s thrilled to have Eales on board as well.

“John was the finest player of his generation and revolutionised the way a second rower/lock played the game,” he said.

“He represented Australia in 86 Tests – 55 as captain – and scored 173 points in a decorated 11-year international career.

“In 1999, John was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for services to the community and rugby.

“Then, in 2011, he was inducted into the Wallaby Hall of Fame.

“So, we’re certainly looking forward to him being guest speaker before a large gathering of club past players and supporters.”
