Rose Davies keen to race into 2022 athletics season

Merewether runner Rose Davies will find it hard to top 2021 but she’s determined to give it her best shot.

The 22-year-old produced a career highlight, winning the Zatopek 10,000 in an outstanding time of 31:39.97, and backed up that form, in May, to finish fourth in the Dutch town of Nijmegen, clocking her fastest-ever effort of 15:08.48 and bettering the Olympic qualifying standard of 15:10.00.

She then represented Australia in the 5,000m at Tokyo two months later.

Her inaugural Games appearance resulted in a respectable 18th, registering 15:50.07 – a solid performance on debut.

Not to be outdone, Davies wrapped up 2021 with another victory, securing the SriLankan Airlines 10k at the prestigious Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival earlier this month.

Although she finished 14th overall, out of 3,733 competitors, the Newcastle Runners star took out the women’s honours, placing in front of her 1,861 female rivals.

She recorded 32.52, relegating New Zealand’s Rebekah Greene (34.17) and fellow Aussie Laura Rose Donegan (35.02) to second and third respectively.

“It’s been a big 12 months for Rose,” father Paul said.

“And, we’re very proud of what she’s achieved.

“Her goal [at Tokyo] was to experience international racing and, of course, set a PB.

“She gained a lot of confidence from it.

“The Olympics is also a stepping-stone for more national teams.

“There’s the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in 2022; and then Paris (Olympics) in 2024, which isn’t that far away.

“So, that recent result on 11 December was a good start to the [new] season.”

We can all expect to read similar triumphs for the talented Davies in the near future, too.
