Roosters crowing about new amenities block in Dora Creek

Southlakes Roosters Junior Rugby League Football Club president Kellie Masters is looking forward to utilising a new facility at Douglass Street Oval.

Her joy comes after Lake Macquarie City Council turned the first sod on a $2.1 million project to replace the previous Dora Creek amenities block, which was damaged beyond repair in a traffic incident last year, necessitating demolition.

The new structure will include female-friendly changerooms, a canteen, accessible toilets, storage space and a referees’ room.

Ms Masters admitted it was exciting to see work underway on the building to support the growing organisation of more than 350 players and volunteers.

“The upgraded amenities will allow us to properly activate the ground for training and competition while supporting the continued growth of our club,” she said.

“Participation is increasing across the board and our female program, in particular, has expanded strongly in recent years.

“These new facilities will ensure all players have access to modern, inclusive spaces and will make a real difference for our players, volunteers and families.

“It’s a fantastic outcome for grassroots sport and the Lake Mac community.”

Mayor Adam Shultz said council had prioritised the replacement to ensure the Roosters and other user-groups could return to the facility “as soon as possible”.

“We know how frustrating it can be to have sporting facilities – that everyone relies on – out of action,” he stated.

“So, we’re making sure we get shovels in the ground at Douglass Street to enable a speedy return to sport at this important venue.

“Sport, especially at the grassroots and junior level, is at the heart of Lake Macquarie’s community.

“We must ensure that everyone can get back on the field with the facilities they deserve sooner rather than later.”

Local contractor Mat Brown Building has been appointed to lead the project, which is expected to be completed by late 2026.
