As Dorothy once stated, “there’s no place like home”.
And, with that famous movie line in mind, one of the most popular sports in the region will make its much-anticipated return to the Hunter this weekend.
The Newcastle Roller Derby League is set to hit the track again at the Newcastle Showground Exhibition Centre, Broadmeadow, on Saturday 15 May.
The Wizard of Oz-themed event will be the first conducted by the organisation since its regular season was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The maiden hit-out for 2021 features an opening game starring Newcastle Junior Roller Derby.
League president Zoe Hennessey, known to her teammates as Moxie Monoxide, admitted the showdown would be an emotional one.
“COVID-19 was a devastating blow to grassroots sporting organisations like ours,” she said.
“Many leagues here and overseas may never fully recover.
“We have worked extremely hard to get back to the standard we feel our fans deserve.
“So, we are infinitely excited to be able to do what we love again.
“Hopefully, we’ll see plenty of fans this weekend.”
Tickets for the event are available via Eventbrite or may be purchased at the door on the day.
Doors will open at 4.30pm, with the first game starting at 5pm.
