Inclement weather could derail Transport for NSW’s (TfNSW) plans to upgrade several locations throughout the Hunter this week.
The organisation is conducting maintenance on Freemans Drive, between Gills Lane and Palmers Road at Freemans Waterhole.
It includes vegetation removal and slope stabilisation.
Work will be carried out from 12 May, from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays, over the next nine months.
Traffic control, a single lane closure and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h are scheduled.
Operators of Over-Size Over-Mass (OSOM) vehicles with an overall width of 4.5 metres or greater are required to stop at one of two waiting bays either side of the roundabout at the intersection of Cessnock Road and Freemans Drive.
They must then call ahead on UHF Channel UHF19, where they’ll be directed through the site.
“Cyclists are also advised to remain particularly vigilant during the period of adjustment, given this temporary change may alter typical vehicle behaviour on the steep northbound uphill corridor,” a TfNSW spokesperson said.
“We emphasise our current lane configuration reflects the necessary scope of essential maintenance work.”
Maitland Road, Hexham
Work resumes on the Hexham Straight Widening project.
To minimise its impact, it’ll be carried out overnight from 7pm to 5am at:
- On Monday 12 May and Tuesday 13 May, traffic will be in a contraflow arrangement on both the inbound and outbound lanes of Maitland Road during night work hours. A temporary reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place from Old Maitland Road (east) to Old Maitland Road (west)
- On Tuesday 13 May, traffic will be in a contraflow arrangement on the outbound lanes of Maitland Road and a temporary reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place from Sparke Street to north of Shamrock Street during night work hours
OSOM operators with a ground contact wider than 3.2m or with overall width greater than 4.5m are asked to contact the project team at least one day ahead of movement on 1800 515 141.
Significant delays can occur if they fail to do so.
A temporary speed limit of 60km/h will remain in place through the project zone during the day work, with a reduction to 40km/h at night.
M1 to Raymond Terrace – Black Hill to Tomago project
Construction continues along the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace.
Work’s slated at night at the following locations:
- From 7pm to 5am on Monday 12 May, Tuesday 13 May and Friday 16 May, the eastbound off-ramp from the New England Highway to Anderson Drive will be closed with a detour in place via New England Highway/Maitland Road
- From 7pm to 5am on Monday 12 May, Tuesday 13 May and Friday 16 May, the eastbound and westbound lanes of the New England Highway will be under a contraflow arrangement from Tarro Rail Bridge to John Renshaw Drive
- From 7pm to 5am on Monday 12 May, Tuesday 13 May and Friday 16 May, the northbound and southbound lanes of the M1 will be under a contraflow arrangement from Weakleys Drive to Black Hill Road
Operators of OSOM vehicles with a ground contact wider than 3.2 metres or with overall width greater than 4.5 metres are advised to contact the TfNSW team on 0423 323 946 at least one day ahead of proposed movement.
Major work resumes across the remainder of the project from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday; from 8am to 5pm on Saturday; and from 7pm to 5am Monday to Friday.
It’ll also require lane closures with intermittent stoppages and temporary speed reductions to 40km/h at the following locations and times:
From 7pm to 5am, on the nights of Monday 12 May until Friday 16 May
- M1 Pacific Motorway at Beresfield and Black Hill
- John Renshaw Drive at Beresfield
- New England Highway at Tarro
- Pacific Highway at Tomago and Heatherbrae
From 7am to 5pm, Monday 12 May until Friday 16 May
- Lenaghans Drive at Black Hill
- Old Punt Road near Pacific Highway at Tomago
- New England Highway Eastbound at Tarro
Lookout Road, New Lambton Heights
Motorists are advised of changed overnight traffic conditions at the intersection of Lookout Road and Kookaburra Circuit between Jacaranda Drive and Ridgeway Road, New Lambton Heights.
City of Newcastle (CN) is carrying out the operation on behalf of TfNSW, which includes drainage repairs, asphalt resurfacing and line marking.
It’ll take place from 8pm on Tuesday 13 May until 5am on Wednesday 14 May.
Motorists leaving John Hunter Hospital will be detoured via Jacaranda Drive to Lookout Road.
Those travelling southbound on Lookout Road to the hospital will enter via Jacaranda Drive.
There’ll be no right-hand turn out of Ridgeway Road onto Lookout Road.
Detours are in place with motorists accessing Lookout Road via Russell Road, while a left turn into and out of Ridgeway Road will be provided.
Emergency vehicles are given priority access through the traffic-controlled area.
