Revitalisation projects, enhancements boost Branxton township

SHARE

It’s all happening in Branxton at the moment, from revitalisation projects to enhancements in the township.

Cessnock City Council unveiled another stage of the Town Centre Upgrade this week.

It included works from Church Street/Paterson Lane towards Anvil Creek Bridge, narrowing the former highway corridor, improving pedestrian experience and parking, and introducing landscaping to create a more welcoming and attractive environment.

Cessnock City mayor Daniel Watton, with council staff, cuts the ribbon on the latest stage of upgrades to the Branxton Town Centre.

“Branxton continues to thrive as a vibrant locale… and is one of the Hunter’s key heritage destinations,” mayor Daniel Watton said.

“The refreshed town centre augments the character of the village, creating a safer, greener and more connected space for residents, businesses and visitors to enjoy.

“Congratulations to council staff for making these important upgrades a reality… and thanks to the NSW Government for its vital funding contribution of $929,000 from the Resources for Regions program.”

New footpaths and kerbs, updated drainage, pedestrian crossing, trees and gardens, parking including wheel stops, a median island on Maitland Street, extra seating and bins, and the installation of a heritage sign were among the improvements.

The project comes amid significant growth in Branxton following the opening of the Hunter Expressway in 2014 and the ongoing development of Huntlee.

Meanwhile, a recent Expression of Interest (EOI) process has secured a new licensee for the 2335 postcode’s postal services.

The existing Branxton Post Office will close at 5pm on Friday 26 June with an outlet opening on Monday 29 June at Piggott’s Pharmacy, Huntlee.

Australia Post has advised this is a full-service Post Office, including banking and passport services, operating Monday to Friday (9am–5pm).

PO Boxes will be relocated to the new location, too.

Residents are advised their number remains the same and their key continues to work as per usual.

Locals have also been asked to provide feedback on the public swimming pool.

“Cessnock City is checking in with the community and pool-users to ensure our services align with everyone’s current and future needs,” Cr Watton said.

“It wants to make sure that your experience at Branxton and Cessnock pools meets expectations as much as possible… and that it is planning for population growth.

“You can help shape the future of the local pools by telling council how you use the pools, what you like and what could be improved by completing the Dive In survey by 26 June.”
