Residents invited to share ideas on future use of old Maitland Hospital

It’s been an eyesore in the community for more than three years.

Now, residents are invited to share their ideas on the future use of the former Maitland Hospital site in High Street, as well as the Block J (Female Public Ward) building.

The medical facility finally closed in January 2022 when most of the health services moved to the new $470 million state-of-the-art precinct at Metford.

NSW Health recently engaged Property and Development NSW to determine the most appropriate usage of the area, which includes several structures of significant heritage value, moving forward.

“Consultation is open for the next three months,” Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison said.

“That will ensure everyone has got ample opportunity to make a submission.

“It’s a very large and diverse site, much bigger than many people in the community might think.

“It includes the old car park behind the family hotel, modern spaces and old houses that have been converted into offices, extensive paddocks on the floodplain, historical buildings and the former emergency department.

“I also realise there has been a lot of opinions in the community (about its future use).

“However, it’s vital we gather them together, so a decision can be made based on feedback from everyone in Maitland.

“Make sure you utilise the Have Your Say portal.

“I know Health Infrastructure has worked with all levels of government to ensure there wasn’t a possible alternative state use of the site.

“In addition, we’ve been trying to be respectful of the staff who are still working on-site, people from palliative care, mental health and sexual assault services, to minimise disruption to them and to ensure they have adequate workspaces.

“We’re working to resolve that as soon as possible.

“But, my commitment has always been for the people of Maitland to have their say on the site.”

Locals can provide feedback by completing the online survey, at https://www.haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/former-maitland-hospital, by 11.59pm on Sunday 1 March.

Following the public consultation period, Property and Development NSW will publish a summary report of all community ideas and commentary received.

The information is expected to help guide any future decisions about the site.
