Lake Macquarie residents will soon have the chance to help shape the future of Speers Point Park.
Councillors have endorsed the public exhibition of a draft Plan of Management and Master Plan for the popular lakeside destination.
The draft documents outline a 15-year vision for the regional park and include proposed upgrades to play spaces, sporting facilities, recreation areas, parking and pedestrian access.
Environmental improvements and new opportunities for arts, culture and events also form part of the plan.
Other proposals include new pathways, more picnic areas and improved sporting amenities.
Council also wants to increase tree canopy and further activate the lakeside precinct.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said Speers Point Park remained one of the city’s most popular destinations.
“Speers Point Park is a destination that attracts people from across Lake Macquarie and beyond, whether they’re coming to enjoy the playground, attend an event, watch sport, visit the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima or spend time by the lake,” he said.
“This draft plan looks at how the park can continue to evolve over the next 15 years while maintaining the things people already love about it.”
Mayor Shultz said the community had already helped shape the draft and encouraged residents to provide further feedback during the exhibition period.
“We’ve already had valuable feedback from the community during the development of the draft plan, and this exhibition period is another opportunity for people to tell us what they think before any final decisions are made.”
The draft plan will now be submitted to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure for approval.
It will then go on public exhibition for at least 42 days and community feedback will help shape the final version before it returns to council.
