Dan Repacholi’s children have never seen the Hunter MP without his impressive trademark beard.
So, they were in for a shock – ironically on Halloween – when the towering politician, with the Ned Kelly look, underwent a dramatic makeover on national television on Friday 31 October to launch Movember.
The Today Show’s Karl Stefanovic shaved off the Special Envoy for Men’s Health’s moustache before Newcastle Knights legend, and Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) Ambassador Kurt Gidley, lopped off the rest of the facial hair.
Now, the five-time Olympian looks like a new man.
“I’ve had this [beard] for 12 years,” Mr Repacholi said.
“I first grew it when my wife was pregnant with our daughter Zoe.
“I figured if she was growing something, I would, too.
“It’s stuck around ever since and has been a big part of my life.
“So, my kids are off me about it (shaving it off).
“They’re filthy.
“But, I’m determined to grow it back.”
Along the way, Mr Repacholi also raised more than $100,000 to be split between three charities, one close to his heart.
They include the Mark Hughes Foundation, CareFlight Australia and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“After losing my grandfather to brain cancer at an early age, I’m passionate about supporting the MHF and increasing awareness for those impacted,” he said.
“That’s why I’m a dedicated advocate for men’s health in the Hunter… and throughout Australia.
“The shave was timed to coincide with the beginning of Movember.
“It’s an annual campaign that raises awareness and funds for men’s health.
“Taking part in such a visible way is about using my platform to support causes that make a real difference.”
