Redhead Public School answers call to support flood-affected communities

Charlestown state MP Jodie Harrison has praised Redhead Public School’s efforts to support families devastated by recent flooding in northern NSW.

When Year 5 student Nixon Sherry saw news coverage of the developing disaster, she was determined to do something to help.

Initially, the youngster was so emotional after hearing families had been forced to flee their homes with nothing, she could not talk about it.

“I had to write a letter to mum to ask if there was something I could do to help,” Nixon said.

She then teamed up with her best friend Sachi Scowen to launch an appeal within her school community.

With the help of their class teacher Mrs Thomas and their 5T classmates, they very quickly collected a large amount of non-perishable goods.

Nixon and Sachi were thrilled with the assemblage of items, which included food and toiletries for families and their four-legged friends.

Ms Harrison paid tribute to the duo’s community spirit in NSW Parliament on Wednesday 22 March.

“Like all of us, Nixon and Sachi were deeply saddened when they saw media coverage of the flood emergency in northern NSW,” she said.

“They acted quickly and effectively.

“Their contribution will make a real difference to families who will continue to need our assistance for a long time to come.

“Their emergency charity drive, organised and completed in just a few days, is a testament to the extraordinary compassion and generous spirit of the entire Redhead Public School community.”
