Redhead duo puts Mudrats to the sword

With Lee Newton and Marcus Christensen leading the way, Redhead upset the much-fancied Mary Ellen Mudrats in the Newcastle District Cricket Association’s Suburban Districts showdown at the weekend.

The eighth-placed outfit stunned the division one defending premiers by the tune of 102 runs at Liles Oval.

Batting first, Redhead produced a strong team effort to post 173, anchored by Newton’s unbeaten 43.

He was well-supported by Joey Parsons (24), Christopher Neal (22), Matt Story (22) and CJ Mitchell (20).

Lucas Sneddon claimed 3-26, with Callan Beamish and Josh Bennett both chipping in with 2-31.

The Mudrats slumped to 5-11 in reply and never recovered, being bundled out for 71.

Only Bennett (27) and Mitch Barry (11) reached double figures.

The damage was done by Christensen, who grabbed 4-31, and Nathaniel Brett, who picked up 3-26.

At Jesmond Park, the Adamstown Rosebuds – currently in seventh spot – also stunned the higher-ranked Wallsend by 30 runs.

PJ Consadine (68) and Corey Bruce (20) paved the way for the side’s competitive 8-134, despite the bowling feats of Viral Mehta (2-17), Sumit Relan (2-22) and Muhammad Umar (2-26).

Varun Sharma (34) and Rohan Mokal (16) started strongly for Wallsend, but the innings fell away badly after their respective dismissals.

That was mainly due to Tom Tredinnick and Consadine, who finished with the figures of 3-10 and 3-16 respectively.

Club championships points at the half-way mark of the Newcastle District Cricket Association competition.

Competition frontrunners Port Stephens Pythons maintained the rage in its three-wicket victory over Merewether at Connolly Park.

In a low-scoring affair, Merewether struggled to get out of first gear, with Jayson Pratten’s 41 providing the bulk of the team’s 8-102.

Shawn Davies collected 2-5, Lleyton Eveleigh snared 2-23 and Jeremy Kirk collected 2-24 with the ball.

The Pythons then slipped to 3-33 early on.

However, Eveleigh backed up his bowling performance with a handy 36.

And, along with Craig Hunter (14) and Kirk (12), he guided Port Stephens to another win.

Ben Troke took 3-20 and James Pryde captured 3-39. In the remaining outings, Premier Hotel drew with Wests Journeymen and Nelson Bay shared the points with Wests Water Board after both matches were washed out.
