It was a red-letter day for the Waratah Mayfield Cheetahs in Newcastle Hunter Rugby League (NHRL) at the weekend.
The organisation walked away with three premierships at the Lakeside Sporting Complex, with success in the men’s A grade, ladies league tag (LLT) A and B grade grand finals.
For Phil Byron’s outfit, it defended its crown from 12 months ago, thanks to an overwhelming 24-8 victory over the Dudley Magpies.
Waratah Mayfield led 12-0 at the break.
And, despite a comeback of sorts from Dudley, the Cheetahs went on with the job in the second period.
The club kicked off a brilliant day, when the LLT A graders upset reigning champions Central Newcastle Butcher Birds 16-12.
Chloe Beckett, Tyra-lee Palmer and Zali Chippendale led the way with tries, while Rhiannon Chivers booted two goals.
Even better, Waratah Mayfield snared the LLT B grade title, too.
But, the Cheetahs were made to work hard for it, pipping the Aberglasslyn Ants 7-6.
A Holly Fisher-Webster field goal proved the difference between the combatants.
Before the deciders, president Jackson Myers praised the girls’ program at Waratah Mayfield.
“It’s definitely been a massive highlight for the club,” he said.
“As well as the two LLT teams, we fielded a side in the Community Plate.
“That’s a big positive for our organisation moving forward, along with the strength of our juniors.
“To have both tag squads playing on grand final day is a great reward for them.
“But, I’m feeling pretty confident both teams will get a win.”
That prediction proved right.
Meanwhile, Newcastle University hammered a gallant Shortland 26-0 in B grade, while the Karuah Roos knocked over Stockton 34-28 in a high-scoring affair.
In the D grade conferences, Clarence Town send Mallabulla packing 30-22 in the northern division, with Kearsley earning the southern honours, courtesy of a 3014 win over West Wallsend.
Hosts Raymond Terrace celebrated a victory in LLT C grade, accounting for Swansea 12-8.
