Summary: Even though the team didn’t play finals footy, Lakes United was one of the surprise packets in 2023 under Ian “Bubba” Bourke. In fact, not many people expected them to trouble a lot of the other sides in the Denton Engineering Cup. But, the Seagulls gave it a good shake, beating Northern Hawks (24-10), Western Suburbs (17-14), Kurri Kurri (32-6 and 64-12), Central Newcastle (54-10) and Macquarie (34-22), while suffering close losses to grand finalist South Newcastle (22-20) and The Entrance (28-20).

Again, Lakes United has a strong foundation to build upon. The club boasts an exciting catchment of young talent, with the under-19s winning the title, and has made some astute purchases in the off-season, including former NRL and Super League star Peter Mata’utia. So, the only way is up for Bubba and his boys, with a semi-final berth not out of the question.
