Summary: Macquarie finished on the same points as Lakes United but enjoyed a better “for and against” percentage. However, that’s not something to cheer about. Grand finalists in 2022, losing to Maitland, the Scorpions appeared destined to challenge for the title 12 months later. But, the club – and coach Matt Roach – experienced a horror run with injuries.

At one stage during 2023, Macquarie was lucky to field a 17-man squad in the Denton Engineering Cup. While most organisations would have used that as an excuse, the Scorpions didn’t. In fact, up until the mid-season, the team was well-placed on the table, with victories over The Entrance, Northern Hawks, Kurri Kurri, Central Newcastle and Lakes United. But, by June, their run was virtually over as the remaining battered troops disappeared on a regular basis. New mentor Jye Bayley will lead an unrecognisable Macquarie into battle this year.
