The Maitland Pickers maintained top spot on the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) ladder following a comprehensive 48-6 victory over the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs at the weekend.
With in-form winger Perry Le Brocque continuing his tryscoring feats, with another hat-trick, the 2020 President’s Cup champions piled on 30 unanswered points in the opening half of the NSW Denton Cup clash.
His treble, along with efforts from Pat Mata’utia (17th), James Bradley (25th) and Kyle Kingston (32nd), complemented Brock Lamb’s three conversions.
Kurri Kurri’s position wasn’t helped by the sending off of captain-coach Mitch Cullen in the 12th minute either.
In fact, Maitland surged to a 48-0 lead, through Brenton Horwood (48th), Lamb (56th) and Matt Soper-Lawler (63rd), plus three goals, before the Bulldogs touched down right on full-time, via Michael Steele, which Ethan Niszczot converted.
The Macquarie Scorpions also flexed their collective muscle with a 40-10 trouncing of The Entrance Tigers at Lyall Peacock Oval.
The match was as good as over at the break, with the hosts leading 28-4.
Sam Abraham (4th), Royce Geoffrey (11th), Andrew Sumner (18th), Ben Roose (25th) and Ro Buaserau (38th) crossed the line, with Kerrod Holland booting four goals.
James Duchatel managed the visitors’ lone score.
The Scorpions increased that margin to 40-4, courtesy of Woodbury (61st) and a second to Abraham (72nd).
Holland piloted the ball between the uprights on both occasions.
Iosua Afoa added some respectability to the scoreline in the 77th minute, which was converted by Matthew Killick.
The Western Suburbs Rosellas claimed their third consecutive scalp, upsetting the Lakes United Seagulls 14-0 at Harker Oval.
It was a close battle early on with Stephen Widders’ try, and Logan Radzievic’s conversion, the only difference between the sides.
In the second period, Malu Fiu (56th) and Frazer Price (61st) dived over.
Despite a tough start, the Cessnock Goannas downed the South Newcastle Lions 30-16 at Townson Oval.
The defending premiers only led 12-10 at the interval on the back of four-pointers to Brendan Williams (21st) and Tyronne Roberts-Davis (39th) and a goal each to the latter and Scott Briggs.
The Lions roared thanks to a double to Jacob Afflick (11th, 34th) as well as a conversion to Jason Keelan.
South Newcastle then hit the front, 16-12, through Thomas Reynolds (45th) and Keelan.
But, Cessnock stepped up a notch with Harvey Neville (50th), Reed Hugo (58th) and Roberts-Davis (72nd) breaking the Lions’ defence in quick succession.
With tempers flaring late in proceedings, Briggs and Jack Welsh received 10 in the bin to cool their heels.
Round 10 wrapped up with the Central Newcastle Butcher Boys producing a stunning comeback to beat the Wyong Roos 36-14 at St Johns Oval on Sunday.
The hosts trailed 14-12 at oranges, with Jake Lewis (10th), Blake Bayley (13th) and Isaac Blackhall (26th), plus a Lachlan Hanneghan goal, stunning the home team.
However, a Denzel Ryan hat-trick (34th, 65th, 68th) saw the Butcher Boys regain the ascendancy.
The winger was ably supported by Cam Anderson (19th), Dylan Phythian (54th), Lachlan O’Brien (61st) and Randall Briggs (78th), with Central Newcastle scoring 24 unanswered points.
Brad Murray snared three goals, and Briggs one, in the final wash-up.
