REAL NRL: Bragging rights up for grabs

A Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) title is not the only thing “going on the line” at McDonald Jones Stadium this weekend.

It appears, bragging rights are up for grabs, too.

When the Maitland Pickers and Toronto-based Macquarie Scorpions run onto the field to vie for the Denton Engineering Cup on Sunday 11 September, both teams will also take a little extra pressure into the showdown – the honour of their respective LGAs (Local Government Areas).

Maitland City mayor Philip Penfold and his Lake Macquarie City counterpart Kay Fraser have turned the season finale into a personal battlefield, all in the name of fun.

It started with Cr Penfold firing the first shot.

“Hey Cr Kay Fraser, how about committing to flying the Maitland flag for one day when the Pickers beat the Scorpions in the grand final?” he said.

“I’ll commit to the same if Macquarie prevails.”

Cr Fraser accepted the challenge… and then doubled down on the bet.

“If the Pickers lose, Cr Penfold, you’ll have to wear a Scorpions jersey to a council meeting,” she stated.

“If they win, I’ll haul on a Maitland jumper.

“PS… let me know your size, I know you’ll look great in green and gold,” she added tongue-in-cheek.

So, to the victor belong the spoils.

The good-natured wager has certainly added an element of spice to the encounter, which is expected to attract between 7,500 and 10,000 people.

It all kicks off from 11.45am with the Western Suburbs Rosellas tackling the Lakes United Seagulls in the under-19 decider, followed by the Northern Hawks-Rosellas clash in reserves.

The main fixture starts at 3pm.
