Public welcome to attend archaeological site

Residents are welcome to attend open day tours of the archaeological investigation site at Maitland this week.

Maitland City Council is inviting members of the public, and guests, to visit the scene, which is currently being excavated at the future location of the organisation’s Administration Centre – adjacent to Town Hall on High Street in central Maitland – on Thursday 17 December.

The tours will provide the community with an opportunity to learn intriguing details and information about the locally-significant artefacts found by the team of archaeologists who have been working on the site since Monday 30 November.

The open day involves a series of 30-minute tours with the first of three sessions beginning at 2pm.

Each gathering will allow a maximum of 10 people with bookings essential.

However, participants must wear enclosed shoes and a sun hat.

“Please be aware that tours may need to be postponed at late notice in the event of unfavourable weather,” a council spokesperson said.

For further information and to book your spot, visit www.maitland.nsw.gov.au/archaeological-open-day or phone council’s customer experience team on 4934 9700.
