Port Stephens gears up for nation’s biggest sailing regatta

SHARE

Port Stephens is ready to embrace its reputation for hosting the largest sailing regatta in Australia from next month.

The 18th edition of Sail Port Stephens returns between 13 April and 3 May.

And, the three-week festival brings more than 300 vessels, thousands of sailors and a trio of major regattas to Nelson Bay and the LGA’s stunning waterways.

Economically, it’s a $3.5 million windfall to the region, too.

Port Stephens mayor Leah Anderson said council was proud to be involved again as a key sponsor.

“Port Stephens is one of the best sailing destinations in Australia,” she stated.

“This event attracts people to the area after the peak holiday period, helps our businesses thrive and creates more jobs.

“While visiting sailors, families and support crews are in town, we encourage them to shop like a local.

“From our restaurants and cafes to retail stores and attractions, Port Stephens has so much to offer.”

For the first time, Nelson Bay will stage activities throughout the full three-week period.

Activations include a vibrant Regatta Village at d’Albora Marina featuring daily entertainment, markets, and sailing presentations for the whole community to enjoy.

“Sail Port Stephens started as a small local event with just a handful of entries in 2008,” Cr Anderson said.

“It’s now Australia’s largest sailing regatta, boasting more than 300 boats.

“It’s a family-friendly festival and free to watch… an amazing experience, no matter if you’re on the water, shore or in the Regatta Village.”

The Sail Port Stephens Street Party is also back, due to popular demand, on Wednesday 15 April.

Magnus and Stockton streets will open to pedestrians only as it transforms into a lively, free, coastal-style celebration.

Attendees can enjoy dining, late-night shopping, pop-up bars and music from 7.30pm.
