Port Stephens DV refuge nears completion

SHARE

Women and children fleeing domestic and family violence will soon find sanctuary in a new refuge in Port Stephens.

Construction on the much-needed premises – developed under the Core and Cluster model – is almost compete, with the facility expected to open later this year.

Thanks to a partnership between Hume Community Housing and Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services (PSFaNS), the shelter features six independent units for women, both single and with children.

They’ll also have access to counselling, group programs, a kids’ playroom and separate youth space, as well as specialist domestic and family violence support.

PSFaNS manager Sue Pollock said it was a landmark moment for the region.

“Women and children in Port Stephens have never had the option of a local refuge before,” she explained.

“It means they’ve had to relocate away from the support of family and friends, changing schools, doctors… in fact, any service or activity they’ve always used.

“For more than 35 years, PSFaNS has worked alongside the community and, for most of that time, women have been advocating for a local refuge to support those experiencing domestic and family violence.

“So, it’s great to know that’s finally coming to fruition.”

Ms Pollock admitted interest from the local community had been overwhelming.

“Many residents have asked how they can help,” she said.

“In response, PSFaNS is offering several ways to be involved.

“At the end of January, an online donation registry will launch, making it easy for individuals, groups and local businesses to contribute to the fit-out of the refuge.

“Our community has always been at the heart of everything we do.

“So, their generosity will play a crucial role in bringing this refuge to life.

“Every contribution, big or small, helps us create a safe, welcoming space for women and children.”

PSFaNS assistant manager Ann Fletcher explained that’s why the organisation was inviting the entire community to “get behind” the project.

“Whether it’s businesses donating new furniture or items, groups holding raffles or fundraisers, or individuals contributing through our online donation registry, every bit of support is valued and appreciated,” she said.

“Together, the generosity and involvement of our community will transform this refuge into a place of safety, hope and healing for women and children across Port Stephens.”
