Projects tackling mental health, cultural inclusion and environmental challenges have received a share of $100,000 in grants.
It’s all thanks to the Port of Newcastle’s 2024 Your Port, Our Community initiative.
Among the recipients was Lifeline Direct, which received approximately $10,000 to help its Islington-based team respond to more than 250 calls to the 13 11 14 national crisis line.
Corporate and community partnerships coordinator Joshua Schultz said the service had experienced record demand over the past year, with in excess of 3,500 phone pleas and 905 text requests on its busiest day in 2024.
“Lifeline Hunter exists to ensure that no person in Australia has to face their toughest moments alone,” he added.
“So, we’re incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of Port of Newcastle.”

The Full Circle Collective was also among the seven organisations.
And, it will continue its free Repair Café, helping reduce waste through sustainable practices.
A Splash of Colour Swimming is set to run two 12-week swimming programs for culturally and linguistically-diverse adults, while also supporting volunteer coordination and data management.
Life Education NSW will deliver 10 days of free Healthy Harold sessions to about 750 disadvantaged students.
Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club is expected to purchase a new trailer and racking system to transport vital rescue equipment.
The University of Newcastle will present The Water Talk exhibition, highlighting the cultural and environmental value of the Port and Coquun River.
Hunter Innovation and Science Hub is providing eco-boat learning tools to schools and host a Hunter EV Festival event.
Lastly, the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation will support patients and families through its Lawn Maintenance and Gardening Care program over the next two years.
The $100,000 in grant funding is in addition to the $1 million Port of Newcastle provides annually to the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund, which is administrated by the NSW Government.
