Popular Poo Palace expected to cause another big stink

SHARE

What kid doesn’t want to climb into a huge mouth and pop out of an equally giant bottom?

Such a statement can only mean one thing.

The much-loved Poo Palace is back to cause another big stink at Newcastle Museum this weekend.

As part of National Science Week 2024, the wildly popular Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) initiative will offer a fun and educational experience for children and adults alike on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August.

For the uninitiated, the Poo Palace is a massive inflatable digestive system that lets visitors journey through every stage of digestion… from tongue to toilet.

Your adventure begins outside the “Palace” with HMRI’s grand “poo-bhah” researchers explaining how solid waste passes through the body.

But, that’s not all.

You’ll also get to participate in “live” experiments, make your very own playdough poos and learn first-hand from HMRI’s gut health experts.

They’ll guide you through how food travels in the digestive system, how diet impacts gut health and share insights into common gastrointestinal disorders.

Two years on from its creation, Professor Simon Keely, lead of Hunter Medical Research Institute’s Immune Health Research Program and the “brains” behind the Poo Palace, is still amazed by its popularity.

“I don’t think anyone in their right mind would have expected it to be as cool as it’s turned out to be,” he said.

“We initially tried to put together something fun and educational.

“And, we knew that kids have a fascination with poo and jumping castles, so it all came together.”
