Sometimes conversations with kids delve into topics that aren’t always comfortable but completely necessary, like what makes farts? And, is my poo normal?
During Science Week 2023, Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is hosting an inflatable exhibition designed to pose those “super important” questions and more.
The Poo Palace is its name.
The giant, inflatable digestive system, located at Newcastle Museum this week, offers kids of all ages the opportunity to voyage through each stage of the digestive journey.

After booking into a 45-minute session, participants can travel from tongue to toilet, learning about the role of the mouth and oesophagus, stomach, large intestine, and colon.
Climbing into a huge inflatable mouth, visitors will exit the 4mx10m display via (you guessed it) a very large bottom.
The sessions include live experiments, a craft desk with playdough poo-making activities, and colouring-in stations.
HMRI team members will be on hand to explain each module.
“Learn first-hand from gut health research experts how food moves through the body, how diet affects gut health and about gastrointestinal disorders,” say organisers.
“You may have seen version 1.0 of the Poo Palace (ie. The Poo Room) which was a key feature of our HMRI Open Days from 2017 to 2019. Previously constructed in an office at the HMRI Building, dark sheeting and props were used to mimic an oversized digestive system.
“The exhibit was a real crowd pleaser and a highly effective way of engaging children, teaching about food science, digestion, healthy diet and the human body.
“The success of this exhibit led to what the Poo Palace is today.
“Standing 4 metres high, 10 metres wide, and completely mobile, the sensory experience can now be enjoyed by so many more children and community members of the Hunter New England Local Health District.”

Poo Palace will be exhibited at Newcastle Museum during National Science Week 2023 (Tuesday 15 August to Sunday 20 August).
Sessions are selling out fast.
