Police are ramping up their search for a driver who allegedly killed a dog during a hit and run incident in Port Stephens this week.
It’s understood a 71-year-old man was walking his canine, Lulu, on Stockton Street, Nelson Bay, near the roundabout at Church Street, just before 9am on Tuesday 13 January.
He paused briefly at the pedestrian traffic island in the middle of the thoroughfare, before continuing to cross the road.
A vehicle – described as a blue Ford Territory or similar – entered the roundabout.
It then clipped the man, impacting his left elbow and leg, and struck Lulu, too, killing the eight-year-old dog instantly.
Incredibly, the driver did not stop or provide details.
Officers attached to Port-Stephens Hunter Police District have started an investigation into the incident.
As inquiries continue, they’ve released CCTV footage of a blue Ford Territory seen in the area and wish to speak with the driver.
Anyone with information or dashcam images is asked to contact Nelson Bay Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
