A renewed appeal for information into the disappearance and suspected murder of Gordana Kotevski may finally provide some closure for her family.
It comes after NSW Police called for public assistance, yet again, earlier this month to help solve the three-decade-long mystery surrounding the Lake Macquarie teenager.
The 16-year-old was last seen being forced into a vehicle on Powell Street, Charlestown, while walking from Charlestown Square Shopping Centre to her aunt’s home on the same road about 9pm on Thursday 24 November 1994.
Witnesses nearby reported hearing a struggle between Gordana and at least two males, before a white ute was observed leaving the area.
Despite extensive investigations at the time, and over the years, she’s not been located.
Then, in early 2025, detectives from Lake Macquarie Police District, with the assistance of the NSW Crime Commission, kicked off Strike Force Bambil to re-examine her alleged homicide.
In April 2026, investigators searched several properties in the region, including West Wallsend, seizing items that underwent forensic examination.
Now, it’s understood, police and archaeologists are focusing their attention on the backyard of an Edgeworth home this week, with the aid of an excavator.
While NSW Police will not comment on the operation, it’s claimed they’re searching for the remains of Gordana.
At a press conference on Monday 4 May, Lake Macquarie Police District Commander Superintendent Tracy Chapman APM said everyone was determined to uncover the truth behind the teen’s disappearance.
“She was only 16 years old when she was taken… and for over three decades her family and loved ones have lived without answers,” she stated.
“Police firmly believe Gordana did not disappear willingly.
“We know people have information.
“It may be something that seemed insignificant at the time, or something someone has kept to themselves for years.
“That information could be the missing piece investigators need.
“With renewed efforts, forensic examinations underway and a $1 million reward on offer, now is the time for anyone with knowledge – whether in Lake Macquarie, the Hunter or elsewhere – to come forward.
“If you know something, tell us.
“You could help provide long-overdue answers for Gordana’s family and bring those responsible to justice.”
