Police are issuing a public warning following numerous stealing and fraud offences, which targeted the elderly within the Hunter.
Officers across several districts and area commands – including Newcastle City, Kuring-Gai, Northern Beaches, The Hills and Hawkesbury – have received reports of the incidents, with some victims claiming losses of hundreds of dollars.
Investigators were told the “prey” had been approached by unknown people.
“They assert the victim has dropped their wallet or cash,” an NSW Police spokesperson said.
“While the person is distracted, their wallet/purse is taken and their cards are subsequently used fraudulently.”
One incident close to home occurred about 4pm on Monday 9 March at a shopping centre car park on Minmi Road, Fletcher.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District were informed an 81-year-old man was approached by an unknown male as he entered his vehicle.
The latter claimed the elderly gentleman had dropped money and he wanted to return it.
He then forced his way into the vehicle.
Luckily, the 81-year-old was able to push him out.
But, he later discovered his bank card was missing and used at a service station in Elermore Vale where $800 was withdrawn.
It’s understood others have experienced comparable episodes in the Hunter.
As inquiries continue, investigators are urging anyone who may have been a victim of a similar incident to report the matter to their local police station or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
