Police have arrested and charged a man following investigations into recent crime in the Hunter.
On 5 January, officers received a report of a break and enter that had occurred overnight at a residence in Janet Street, Merewether.
During the break-in, a mountain bike was stolen from the garage.
After enquiries, police identified a 45-year-old male as a suspect for this offence.
About 12.10pm on Wednesday 17 February, officers from Newcastle City Proactive Crime Team sighted the man pushing a mountain bike in Hassall Street, Hamilton South.
The male dropped the bicycle and fled on foot, with police chasing him through various apartment blocks.
After a period of time, he was successfully located and arrested on the fourth floor of a unit block attempting to hide.
Officers located the bicycle the male was earlier pushing and it was later identified to have been stolen two days prior from an address in Dumaresq Street, Hamilton.
The Adamstown resident, who is currently subject to a 12-month community corrections order, was taken to Newcastle Police Station.
He was later charged with break, enter and steal and goods in custody reasonably suspected stolen.
Bail was refused by police for him to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 18 February.
