Plans revealed for Wickham’s Union Street renewal

Plans to upgrade Wickham’s Union Street have been unveiled, with City of Newcastle (CN) calling for tenders to deliver a series of pedestrian and public domain improvements.

The project will focus on the stretch between Station and Throsby streets, introducing traffic calming measures and a one-way shared zone.

Enhancements also include new lighting, landscaping, seating and paving, along with stormwater conversions and changes to the roadway.

Council’s CEO Jeremy Bath said the works formed part of the broader Wickham Public Domain Plan.

“This is the first phase to transform Wickham while celebrating its unique character,” he stated.

“We worked closely with numerous stakeholders including local community group Great Lifestyle of Wickham during the development of the Public Domain Plan and are pleased to now be moving forward with the maiden venture.

“By breathing new life into Union Street, we will create a sense of place and character for everyone who lives, works or spends time in Wickham.

“Now, we’re inviting tenders from experienced contractors to help City of Newcastle bring this vision to reality, with a view to begin construction around October this year.”

Specialist heritage advice will be sought as part of the process, including the reuse of existing materials such as patterned stones along Union Street.

Work to preserve and restore the pavers is expected to start in June, ahead of the main construction stage.

Community consultation on the Wickham Public Domain Plan took place in February 2023, with 74% of respondents supporting proposed pedestrian and traffic improvements.

Mr Bath said the suburb continued to play a major role in the city’s west end, with strong connections to public transport and growing interest from residents and investors.

“The plan provides a clear, shared vision for future improvements to spaces and aims to create a welcoming and positive environment while also improving safety and accessibility,” he added.
