Pedestrian dies following crash at Sandgate

In a tragic start to the week, a pedestrian has died following a crash at Sandgate on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to Maitland Road about 9.10am on 25 May after receiving details of a major accident on the busy thoroughfare.

At the scene, officers attached to Newcastle City Police District were told that a male had been hit by a truck.

The pedestrian was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have since been notified that he died in hospital.

He’s yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old man, was not injured.

However, he was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway.
