One of the region’s “under-utilised” gems could benefit from a massive windfall if Independent Philip Penfold prevails at next month’s federal election.
The Maitland City mayor, who’s contesting the seat of Paterson on 3 May, has apparently secured $10 million in funding to remediate the contaminated Walka Water Works.
Although council manages the site, it’s owned by the NSW Government, with people questioning how it’s a federal issue.
“The families of Maitland and surrounding communities have waited too long for the safe reopening of this beloved asset,” he said.
“I believe the Labor government has failed in its duty to remediate the site and safely hand it back to the community.”
The proposed $10 million package will fund immediate remediation to the lawns and cover the restoration and fit-out of the first floor of the historic pump house building, allowing for weddings to return to the much-loved locale.
“Walka is historically significant and a beloved site for many,” Mr Penfold said.
“It’s a popular choice for weddings and events and without immediate action, we risk a valuable community asset falling into disrepair.”
He added revitalising the site would ensure the people of Paterson continued to enjoy the historic community reserve and protect its legacy for future generations.
“I’m not here to make empty promises,” Mr Penfold said.
“I live here, I listen and I act.
“This commitment is about delivering real outcomes for our community and I call on the Liberal and Labor candidates to match it.
“It’s incredibly disappointing the Labor government has chosen to walk away from this vital project.
“Council put forward a sensible variation to ensure the Walka Water Works redevelopment could still go ahead within the available budget, yet that was rejected.
“This decision puts the future of a beloved asset and important regional tourism opportunity at risk, leaving our community without the investment it was promised.”
